DR. GERALD GARTH JOHNSON

 

GERALD (GERRY) G. JOHNSON 68, of Bend, Oregon, recently of Salem, passed away as a result of Pancreatic Cancer on October 6, 2005.

 

He was born March 13th, 1937 in Portland, Oregon to Charles G. and Violette M. Brewer Johnson.  He graduated from Medford High School in Medford, OR.  Continuing education at Willamette University, he graduated with a Bachelor in Music Education in 1958, a Master of Music Education in 1964.  He was a member of Phi Delta Theta and Kappa Delta Pi.  He received Outstanding Oregon Educator through Phi Delta Kappa International Honoree.  He also attained his Doctorate in Public Administration from California Western University.  He taught English and Music in Madras, OR, Woodburn, OR. And Lake Oswego, OR.  After teaching he became Manager of Education Services of the State of Oregon Children Services Division.

 

A retiree of the State of Oregon Children Services Division, he went back to his love of teaching and mentoring students.  He loved genealogy and researched his ancestors back to 14th century England.  As a proud descendant of Captain John Johnson, he wrote numerous books about the Johnson's, their accomplishments, and had 14 published works.

 

He is survived by his wife, Nancy A. (Ticknor) Johnson, Daughters LeAnne M. Shaw, of Salem, OR., Lisa M. Ford of Carmel, Indiana, and his son Geoffrey G. Johnson of Salem, OR., five grandchildren:  Aaron and Ryan Shaw of Salem, OR., James, Blake, and Samantha Ford of Carmel, Indiana.  Numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins.  He was preceded in death by his parents, and most recently his sister Karlene M. Messer in June of 2004.

 

At the request of the deceased, there will not be a service.  Following cremation he will be honored at a later date.  The family requests donations be made to The American Cancer Society, St. Charles Medical Center - Bend, and Central Oregon Home Health and Hospice.   Deschutes Memorial Chapel and Gardens has been entrusted with the arrangements.
